Whenever my mum questions me about my relationship status, lack of boyfriend, lack of ring, lack of husband, lack, lack, lack …. my answer is always the same. There is more to life than marriage!
She used to get really upset hearing this answer, but after I broke it down to her, she has finally understood. Give me a few minutes to explain this to you.
I feel like we live in a society where once a woman has finished formal education and has a stable job the next thing people are wondering is who is your boyfriend or where is your husband!? I’m not saying that I don’t want to be in a relationship or get married (Lord knows I do and the RIGHT ONE is coming) but there is definitely more to life than this.
If marriage is seen as the end goal to fulfilling your life, then what is next after this? If my whole focus and energy is on finding someone to marry and spend the rest of my life with, then what happens after the wedding day!? Who am I after the wedding day!? What is my purpose and what have I built during my single life that will help me be an amazing wife and mother?
Being single is almost frowned upon and I feel as though Valentine’s day amplifies this. Its almost as if single women (especially) feel embarrassed or feel like pariahs if they are not in a relationship or don’t have a date planned. There is nothing wrong with being single. I think it is an amazing time to learn more about yourself, grow and build yourself up – be it your character, your career or other aspects of your life.
For anyone that is in a dead end relationship, clutching on in fears of being single, I’ll leave you with this:
Do you remember growing up and trying to force your foot into a shoe that doesn’t fit anymore? It is no longer the right fit for you and you’ve got to let it go. Please apply this analogy to your relationship. If it’s no longer working, it’s causing too much pain, things are difficult – you’ve got to let it go!
